Oahu is an island rich with scenery, tradition, and lots of
things to see and do. As the centerpiece of the Hawaiian archipelago,
and the perennial destination for thousands of visitors from around
the world each day, the choices for island recreation are nearly
limitless. Here is a partial list of activities that guests of the
Waikiki Marina Resort at the Ilikai can enjoy, both on and off the
premises.
• Surf the North Shore, or just watch. In winter months, it’s
worth a drive to Sunset Beach, Waimea Bay, and Bonsai Pipeline, to
watch adventure-crazed surfers tackle the watery behemoths of Oahu’s
famous surfing spots. (In the summer, the water can be so calm it’s
hard to imagine the moving walls of water that kick up in the high
season. But it’s also a great time to visit, because you can
experience the beaches up close and personal, without getting
waterlogged.)
• Savor the Spa experience. There are a number of exceptional
nearby spas that can have you feeling refreshed, relaxed, and
beautiful. Ask the concierge for a recommendation.
• Stay in shape at the Waikiki Marina Resort fitness center,
where you can pump up, work out hard and cool down, all in one
state-of-the-art facility.
• The Waikiki Marina Resort at the Ilikai guests can get into
the swing of things on our Plexipave® tennis court, where an HITT-certified
tennis pro is available daily for private lessons and clinics.
• Enjoy a dinner cruise for two, or for the whole family.
• Take the plunge. The Hawaiian Islands are a scuba diver’s
paradise, with no shortage of certified dive operators to take you to
the best underwater spots.
• Watch whales. In the winter months, the mighty humpbacks
complete the journey from the Arctic to the warm Pacific waters of
Hawaii to reproduce, give birth and nurse newborn calves. The season
lasts from November through May.
• Experience a luau. There are a number of wonderful luaus
that you and your family can attend on the island. A luau is a great
opportunity to sample Polynesian foods: “imu,” the pork that is cooked
in the ground on the day of the luau; and “poi,” a Hawaiian dish made
from taro root. Luaus traditionally feature live Hawaiian dance and
music performances. Group packages and transportation is often
provided, and the concierge will happily make your arrangements.
• Hit the high seas for an all-day deep sea fishing excursion.
You can keep what you catch, and the deck hands will even clean ‘em
for you. Again, check with the concierge to make a reservation. |
